The Clay County Mine, a historic mine in the Central City Mining District, is unique. Rather than accessing the mine through a traditional vertical shaft, a series of inclines and declines connected through tunnels based at a portal on the surface offers access to the mine. Black Fox, in partnership with GS Mining, is restoring and continuing these tunnels in the Clay County Mine to extract ore from deeper and deeper depths.
The Clay County Mine shut down around 1910 due to rising inflation rates. The mine once again operated between 1933-1942 but was shut down for WWII and a national prohibition on gold ownership. In the late 1970s, rehabilitation projects added the decline shaft and confirmed the original vein stemming from the Gregory Lode. Two additional veins were also discovered. Unfortunately, the mine remained idle once again as gold rates dropped.
Today, Black Fox and GS Mining's efforts are once again revitalizing this important mine to extract ore responsibly and safely from its deep depths.
